Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Special Encores

I am in the process of compiling a list of encores that aren't standard encore fare. Here's what I've come up with so far:

Drums-> Viola Lee Blues -> Caution Jam -> Viola Lee Blues-> Feedback-> What's Become of the Baby-> Feedback-> And We Bid You Goodnight
4/26/69, Electric Theatre, Chicago IL
(Not streamable because a portion of the show was released on DP 26)

Eyes of the World-> Stella Blue, Johnny B. Goode
10/19/73, Fairgrounds Arena, Oklahoma City OK
DP 19 (the encore is just icing on the cake of this all-timer)

Eyes of the World
6/26/74, Providence Civic Center, Providence RI
DP 12 http://www.archive.org/details/gd74-06-26.moore.weiner.gdADT17.16037.sbeok.shnf (AUD)

7/27/74, Roanoke Civic Center, Roanoke VA
http://www.archive.org/details/gd74-07-27.sbd.kaplan.2420.sbeok.shnf

Dark Star
7/13/84, Greek Theatre, Berkeley CA
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1984-07-13.beyerm160.quirk.perez.31989.sbeok.flac16 (listen to the crowd go nuts)

China Cat Sunflower-> I Know You Rider, One More Saturday Night
4/30/88, Frost Amphitheatre, Palo Alto CA
http://www.archive.org/details/gd88-04-30.prefm.lai.3394.sbeok.shnf

One More Saturday Night, Ripple (1st in 7 years, 1st electric in 17 years, last time played)
9/3/88, Capital Center, Landover MD
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1988-09-03.akgmics.suraci.82980.sbeok.flac16

Any more contributions would be greatly appreciated; I'm sure I've missed something. Hope you enjoy!

There's a new year's show from the late 80's (?), with Maria Muldaur and the boys doing Goodnight Irene, but I'm not sure which year it is.

How about Blackbird-Brokedown Palace from 6-23-88 or 9-21-91 All Over Now encore. Also 7-3-88's NFA. What's even more rare is established encore songs making it back into the regular lineup after being relegated to the encore position. 4-5-89 has a nice first set US Blues.
Cheers

Not sure just how special these are - this is what I found by looking at some of the shows I attended that had non-standard encores in my mind

5/18/80 - Alabama Getaway, 4/17/82 - It's all over now Baby Blue, 4/13/83 - Touch of Grey, 9/20/87 - Touch of Grey > Brokedown.

I'm pretty sure that Baby Blue was always an encore ... at least after they brought it back in the 80's ... but you picked an outstanding version of it, my favorite ...

Couple more double encores from 88: 10-18-88 Iko Iko- Knocking On Heavens Door, and the rarest of rare the double regular encore on 7-30-88 US Blues, Knocking and according to the setlist I'm looking at, OMSN ended the second set to boot. I think there is an early 80's Shakedown encore out there and for sure a late 70's? Terripin encore but I can't seem to find them at the moment.

Terrapin encore was at Englishtown, with Bobby playing the two-neck guitar. I've never heard this aud but the Dicks Picks is pretty fantastic:

Hope no one has mentioned this already, but 7/17/76 encore was U.S. Blues and a 14 minute Not Fade Away. The audience tape of 7/16 and 7/17 are worth a DL.

Red Rocks '78 was pretty nice too: Terrapin>OMSN, Werewolves. This version of Werewolves MUST be heard from the MOTB AUD source to really appreciate!

An untypical encore from one of my all-time favorite shows, (and a sweet version!): Swing Low Sweet Chariot from 6/24/70.
The first encore was UJB but as you will hear on this AUD the crowd simply won't leave without a second encore
